Bowmanville is home to the Bowmanville Foundry, the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station, a Royal Canadian Mounted Police regional office and the Goodyear conveyor belt factory. There is a large marina on Lake Ontario at Port Darlington, south of town. Darlington Nuclear Generating is the major employer in the region. Bowmanville has become a “bedroom community”, with most of its citizens working outside of the town and commuting to work in nearby Oshawa or traveling over 75 km to Toronto.

Most people commute using Highway 401, or the GO Train which leaves from Oshawa and there are efforts to expand this service to Bowmanville.
